Australia have suffered significant injury setbacks ahead of their upcoming T20I series against Pakistan, with star fast bowlers Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood both set to miss the tour as they continue recovering from recent injuries.

Australia Hit by Major Injury Blows Ahead of Pakistan T20 Series

Cummins Rested as Precaution

Australia’s all-format pace spearhead Pat Cummins has been under close medical management since returning from a stress fracture in his back, which sidelined him before the Ashes series.

Although Cummins made a successful comeback later on, the Australian team management is unwilling to risk overloading him ahead of a congested schedule that includes the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. His omission from the Pakistan tour is being viewed as a long-term fitness decision, rather than a short-term tactical call.

Hazlewood’s Recovery Remains Delicate

Josh Hazlewood’s situation is more concerning. The right-arm quick was ruled out of the Ashes entirely after a hamstring injury, which was further complicated by Achilles soreness.

While his rehabilitation is reportedly progressing well and keeps him on track for a return before the T20 World Cup, medical staff have advised selectors not to rush him back for the Pakistan series. As a result, Hazlewood has also been left out of the tour.

Australia to Miss Key Experience

The absence of Cummins and Hazlewood means Australia will travel to Pakistan without two of their most experienced fast bowlers for the three-match T20I series. This significantly weakens their bowling attack, particularly in subcontinental conditions, where control and experience are crucial.

Australia are now expected to rely on bench strength and fringe pacers, turning the series into an audition for backup fast bowlers ahead of the World Cup.

Pakistan Tour Details Confirmed

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has already confirmed that Australia’s tour will feature three T20 internationals only, with no ODIs or Tests scheduled.

For Australia, the matches will now serve a dual purpose — competitive internationals against Pakistan and a selection trial for fast-bowling depth. However, losing Cummins and Hazlewood at this stage of World Cup preparation is widely seen as a major blow to both their firepower and leadership.
