The federal government has decided not to reduce the basic electricity tariff nationwide for 2026, despite NEPRA approving a 62-paisa per unit reduction.

According to officials from the Power Division, the approved reduction would have lowered the tariff from Rs. 34 per unit to Rs. 33.38 per unit, but the government opted to maintain uniform electricity rates across Pakistan.

Federal Government Maintains Electricity Tariff for 2026

Background

  • The Power Division had requested a uniform tariff for all consumers in NEPRA.

  • NEPRA approved the reduction and sent its recommendation to the federal government.

  • The government decided to continue subsidizing electricity, keeping the basic tariff unchanged.

Current Electricity Scenario

  • Installed capacity in the National Grid: 36,397 MW

  • Dependence on imported fuel: 26%

  • Subsidy for electricity consumers: Rs. 629 billion

Officials confirmed that there will be no increase or decrease in electricity prices for 2026, ensuring stable rates for consumers while maintaining protection for vulnerable users.

Impact on Consumers

  • Electricity users will continue paying the same rates in 2026.

  • The decision ensures price stability while the government continues to provide significant subsidies to households and businesses.

This measure is part of the government’s ongoing effort to protect consumers and maintain energy affordability amid rising fuel import costs.
